THE SQUARE

The square is a symbol located on the right breast area of the Mormon underwear, officially called the "garment of the Holy Priesthood." The garment is worn by all temple Mormons as "a shield and a protection to you from the power of the destroyer until you have finished your work on the earth." 1

A close examination of the garment reveals two button holes sewn in the shape of a square reminding the Mormon of the "need for exactness and honor in living up to his temple vows." 2

Evidence shows that the square was originally taken from the Masonic ritual where the Fellowcraft candidate (2nd degree--Blue Lodge) is challenged on his naked right breast by the point of the square. According to Masonic tradition, the candidate is originally taught that the square is both "a symbol of morality" and the "emblem of a Master Mason." 3

According to the Masonic Lodge, however, the real truth behind its symbols is reserved for the "elect." Masonic Lecturer Dr. John Wesley Kelchner explains, "Freemasonry is a complete system of symbolic teachings, and can be known, understood and appreciated only by those who study its symbolism, and make themselves acquainted with it's occult meanings." 4

The symbol of that degree is an old hermetic (Gnostic or occultic) figure of a two-headed being. The male arm is holding the square. According to Masonic Grand Commander Albert Pike, "The square...is a natural and appropriate Symbol of this earth...The hermaphroditic figure is the Symbol of the double nature anciently assigned to the Deity, as Generator and Producer, as Brahm and Maya among the Arians, Osiris and Isis among the Egyptians. As the Sun was male, so the Moon was female; and Isis was both the sister and the wife of Osiris. The Compass, therefore, is the Hermetic Symbol of the Creative Deity, and the Square of the productive Earth or Universe." 5

There appears to be strong evidence of a connection between the use of the square in both Masonry and Mormonism and to its use in witchcraft. William Schnoebelen, author of Mormonism's Temple of Doom, gives us his account (when he went to the Mormon Temple):

"I was amazed at how well the occult symbolism had been carried through on the stitched marks: the temple garment was a textbook study in Luciferian symbolism. I was well acquainted with the Masonic symbols because at a certain point in my Wiccan development, my teachers told me to seek Masonic initiation, so I did....Here I learned the profound links between Lucifer-worship, Wicca and Masonry.

"Over the right breast of the Mormon undergarment is a square. The right hand side is masculine and sacred to the Horned God (who we in Wicca eventually learned was Lucifer). The square is sacred to Lucifer because of its phallic connotations, and the Fellowcraft candidate in Masonry is challenged on his right breast by the point of the square."
